Watching them today, Yerin and Eunha really are like friends.
Eunha:
It’s our first time doing a pictorial with just the two of us, but when we shoot our album jackets, I usually do it with Yerin. It felt the same so we were comfortable in front of the camera.
Yerin:
Eunha is my right arm and I am her left arm (laughs). Come to think of it, Eunha always sits next to me in the car on the way to a schedule. Eunha is my other half (laughs).

Do you have similar tastes?
Yerin:
Both of us are blonde now (laughs). We have similar tastes in food, so if we run a YouTube channel together, I think it’ll probably be a ‘mukbang channel’.
Eunha:
We’ve got the same taste in thriller movies. I watch a sad romance movie when I want to cry. I also like action movies too. In the past we used to go to movies often.

On the other hand, are there any parts you guys think are a little different?
Eunha:
Unnie likes pasta but I don’t really like it. It’s really just difference in food preferences.
Yerin:
No matter how much I think about it, there’s not that many differences. I guess we’ve become alike because we’ve been together for a long time (laughs).

GFRIEND’s teamwork is already ‘complete’. I can still feel the amount of practice that’s gone into it when you’re on stage. I think it’s hard to still keep your beginner’s mindset but are there things you don’t want to forget?
Yerin:
All GFRIEND members are still greedy to do well on stage. Every time I go on stage, we all try to show an even better self. We’re studying constantly for new gestures, and if the choreography doesn’t fit at all, continue until it does. Even if one person doesn’t get fit, everyone will practice together and help. Unity and harmony are the most important things.
Eunha:
When I see the members working hard, I feel motivated to practice more. Since we’re working as a group, not as soloists, we try our hardest not to harm each other.

Are there any changes compared to when you first debuted?
Yerin:
I used to be very nervous doing interviews like this. I feel more comfortable now compared to then. When I answered something, I always thought about whether it’d be the correct answer. There actually aren’t any right answers in an interview but I kept looking for the right answer. Like an exam. But being on air or on stage is still nerve-wracking. Especially the first stage of a new album. No matter how much you practice, it’s no use when you make mistakes on stage. Fans who have been watching me for 5 years notice that I’m sometimes nervous. When that happens, I’m grateful that they can see what I feel.
Eunha:
Same with me. I still can’t sleep at night before a showcase. I’m usually not that nervous, but right before the showcase my heart drops.

Nevertheless, there are still many legendary performances by GFRIEND. What was the most memorable one?
Eunha:
We performed ‘Me Gustas Tu’ at a large concert where many singers were present and fans of other singers sang our lyrics perfectly from start to finish. That’s when I got goosebumps.
Yerin: As expected ‘Me Gustas Tu’ was the most memorable. I've usually been the most nervous on stages for the title songs, but during the choreography of ‘Me Gustas Tu’, I have a part of where I vault over Umji. I was always nervous about making mistakes on stage. I'm glad there's no big problem so far.

Now if you go to broadcast stations for music shows, there are lots of hoobae (juniour) groups.
Eunha:
Yes. I realise that a lot of time has passed when we get the ending stage. We usually perform in the order of debut year. And after the ending stage, all the singers would wait on stage for the winner announcement. It feels like everyone is watching our performance so I feel a bit burdened. I feel like I should do even better (laughs).
Yerin:
I always have the thought of wanting to remain as a good sunbae (senior) in the future.

Who are the singers that Yerin and Eunha admire?
Yerin:
I tend to listen to all the songs on the music charts. But these days, female soloists are especially  noticeable. IU, Taeyeon, Sunmi and Chungha all sing alone but they always fill the stage. I think that’s amazing.

When GFRIEND debuted, I liked that you referred yourselves not as “weak girls” but “brave girls”. How do you express your emotions on stage? I think it’s a little more difficult because of your intense choreography.
Yerin:
I always think about it but it’s hardest to express it naturally. So I always listen to a lot of songs. When I listen to the song, I get emotionally invested and find gestures eyes that fit the song.
Eunha:
Actually, our members are all very brave and easygoing, so I think we’re able to naturally get into a concept (laughs).

GFRIEND are famous for being a ‘lyrical restaurant’. What are your favourite lyrics?
Eunha:
In ‘Glass Bead’ I like the part “Don’t be nervous, does it seem like a dream, I am shining for you”. It’s like saying this to the fans. I think. that’s why I became a singer.

Have you ever said that to yourself?
Eunha:
'Glass Bead’ was our debut song, I knew about the lyrics before we actually debuted and I comforted myself with to to not be nervous.

Have you relieved a lot of nervousness now? There must be a moment when you feel like you’ve become an adult.
Yerin:
I’ve become calmer. I don’t think I knew I’d ever have this many emotions before. I was said when I was sad, happy when I was happy, but now I think I can control my emotions at any situation.
Eunha:
There was a time when I was very hurt and had a hard time reading malicious comments, but now I have to courage to draw a line and block it out.

If you look at GFRIEND’s albums so far, do you think about how GFRIEND’s music will change in the future?
Eunha:
If we sang songs as innocent girls in the past, I think now we can sing as more confident women now.
Yerin:
I think there will be different stories for each age. But like we’ve done so far, I want to show how our members continue to grow.

You’re releasing a new album in July. If you could give a hint?
Eunha:
It’s a shame we can’t reveal anything yet, but what’s clear is that we’re working very hard (laughs). I’m going to the practice room after this interview. Please look forward to it!

What are you looking forward to the most before your comeback?
Yerin:
I can’t wait to see the fans’ reactions. I’m most curious about how they’ll react when we release songs to the public when I’ve only listened to it on my phone.
Eunha:
I stream songs on music sites and watch a lot of music videos on YouTube. When the song is officially released, it’s our song but it doesn’t feel like our song. It’s like seeing a celebrity (laughs).

2020 is already half gone. It’s time to make an interim check to see if you’re doing well with your plans this year.
Eunha:
My goal was to read a lot of books this year and while I did read a few, I’m still lacking a lot. I just thought of this plan and decided to read harder from now on.
Yerin:
I made a bucket list earlier this year. There was bleaching on the list and I’m blonde now. Other than that, I’ve accomplished a lot more secret things (laughs).

What does the diary contain?
Yerin:
I used to keep a diary like I’m doing homework, but it’s meaningless if I force myself to do it. So now I leave stories that I want to remember in the future. I’m using it when I have something important or when I want to use it.

You must have spent a lot of time at home these days, what did you do?
Eunha:
Three days ago, I went to my relative’s house with my family and saw a game called ‘Ruumikub’. I fell in love with the game and played till 3am but of course, my win rate is terrible (laughs).
Yerin:
I’m enjoying online shopping these days because I’m interested in accessories. It’s quite fun to find fashion items that suit me.

eunha
I just found a difference between Yerin and Eunha. What you’re wearing now is completely different. Yerin is wearing a dress and Eunha is wearing a comfortable T-shirt.
Eunha:
I always buy comfortable clothes so I’m a little worried. I’ve only got oversized T-shirts, hoodies and trackies in my closet (laughs).

I found out about it on Instagram recently, but all the members started their own accounts. Is there a special reason?
Eunha:
Because of Coronavirus, we didn't get chances to meet the fans so we made it to share some of our daily lives. I wanted to dress up a little and look cool but it was hard (laughs)
Yerin:
The process of thinking about how to upload was fun. My self-esteem was also increased.

What would you like to challenge if you were to do solo activities?
Eunha:
Since I like songs, I want to show my cover performances to more people.
Yerin:
I think it’d be nice to show my more diverse sides on a YouTube channel.

The two of you are spending your 20s together. Face to face everyday. Lastly, what would you like to say to each other?
Eunha:
We’re still young and have a lot of days left. So let’s not be afraid to challenge anything.
Yerin:
20s are probably the prettiest age in life. It’s so beautiful right now, but I hope we can live a life that is a little less shy when we look back. It’s great that we can move forward sharing this time together. Let’s be happy in the future!
